Statement: Paintings

Under the visible surfaces of my paintings are webs of flung textural medium, often created with all the physcial energy I can conjure. Over time, this first interaction with my blank canvases has evolved, from an emotional confrontation, to being a means of resonating with the unseen energies and forces inherent to all life. These webs mimic the universal complexity of interconnected systems, and challenge me to balance the outcome with any simplicity or clarity.

To varying degrees, I allow the imagery produced by this randomly generated foundation to encourage a continued dialogue between the canvas and myself. There is a push/pull between the unconscious and conscious, between the intuitive and rational, between order and chaos. By cyclically returning to this physical and metaphorical ritual, my hope is to maintain a mental elasticity to better navigate the many paradoxical relationships confronting daily life.
